High Performance Metal Stainless Steel Floating Valve Tray Column Internals
Introduction
Valve tray has valve holes opened and valve element equipped available to ride up and down within some proper scope. The circulation area between the floating valve and tray could be adjusted automatically along with the changes in gas load, so its available to maintain stable operations within a broad scope of gas loads. Gas may be blown out horizontally from the tray, so that the gas-liquid contact is of long time, the entrainment is small, and the fall of liquid level is also
relatively small. Compared with bubble cap tray, floating valve tray has bigger processing capacity, lower pressure drop, and
higher tray efficiency.

Float valve tray is consist of float valve and column plate, it is provided with a plurality of circular or rectangular valve hole, each valve hole is equipped with a valve slice floating up and down to control vapor flow. It is widely used in atmospheric and vacuum units of petroleum, FCCU, gas fraction, hydrogenation, coking, PX plant, aromatic extraction and methanol plan. Float valve tray can provide a higher efficiency over a wider operating range than sieve trays.
ESP Floating Valve
The ESP floating valve can be either circular or rectangular, and the height of the valve legs can be selected based on pressure and gas flow rates. Unlike conventional floating valves, the ESP valve has unique features including a robust design to reduce valve wear, anti-rotation structures, and easy in-situ replacement. Floating valves are one of the widely used tray structures in China, known for their outstanding performance. Their main features include:
(1) High Operational Flexibility
Due to the free movement of the valve discs, they can adapt to sudden changes in gas flow. The gas slot velocity remains nearly constant, maintaining high separation efficiency even under widely fluctuating operating conditions.
(2) High Separation Efficiency
In practical applications, tray efficiency can reach 60-70%, which is 10-15% higher than that of bubble cap trays. Moreover, efficiency remains high even under low-load conditions.
Thanks to this high efficiency, product quality is also improved accordingly.
(3) High Processing Capacity
The arrangement of floating valves is much more compact than that of bubble cap trays, increasing the open area. Additionally, since the gas flows horizontally into the liquid layer, entrainment is reduced, allowing for higher gas flow rates and increased production capacity. The production capacity is 20-40% higher than that of bubble cap trays.
(4) Low Pressure Drop
Gas passing through the floating valves undergoes only one contraction, expansion, and change in direction, resulting in a lower pressure drop compared to bubble cap trays. In atmospheric columns, the pressure drop per tray is only 3-5 mmHg.
Furthermore, floating valve trays offer advantages such as simple structure, low cost, long service life, resistance to fouling by dirty materials, and ease of installation and operation.
Distillation Process
1. The gas and liquid phases mix, forming foam. 2. Mass transfer occurs within the foam. 3. The gas phase rises to the upper tray. 4. The liquid phase flows down the downcomer to the lower tray. 5. The same steps are repeated on the lower tray. Based on the feed rate and tower diameter, the overflow patterns are categorized into: single overflow, double overflow, triple overflow, and quadruple overflow, among others.
